Whale Watching

The South Shore of Kaua`i has plenty of whale-watching, both from land and sea. The best time to view whales is between November and March, with the peak season in February. The best places in the area are Mahaulepu, Po`ipu Beach Park, Lawa`i Beach and Spouting Horn. If you want to get a little closer, you can take a whale-watching tour. Most launch from Port Allen (see The West Shore) and there are a few that launch from Po`ipu.

Kaua`i Seariders Adventures, www.kauaiseariders.com, 808-332-7238, has a three-hour tour on their rigid-hull inflatable. The tour includes snorkeling and lunch.

Kaua`i Z Tours, Kukuiula Harbor, 888-998-6879, 808-742-7422, www.ztourz.com, offers whale-watching during their snorkel tours. See Snorkeling for more information.

During the winter, Na Pali Riders, 808-742-6331, www.napaliriders.com, runs whale-watching tours out to Kipu Kai on their rigid-hull inflatable.

Sunset Cruises

There’s nothing more romantic than watching the sunset whie you’re sailing. There are plenty of sunset cruises. Most leave from Port Allen and head up the Na Pali Coast. However, there are a couple of companies that take the journey around the Po`ipu Coast.

Blue Dolphin Charters, 808-335-5553, 877-511-1311, Port Allen, www.kauaiboats.com, has a sunset cruise that sails around the Po`ipu area. This two-hour cruise includes dinner, drinks and live music and is available only in the summer. $95 per person. They also have a year-round cruise around Na Pali for $116 per person.

Captain Andy’s, 800-535-0830, 808-335-6833, www.napali.com, Port Allen, takes you on their 55-foot catamaran for a sunset cruise along the South Shore off of Po`ipu. The ride takes you toward Mahaulepu and Kipu Kai. This is a basic tour that includes cocktails, but the choices are limited. They do have musicians playing Hawaiian music throughout the cruise. $69 per person.
