Limahuli Botanical Garden and Preserve, Kuhio Highway,
Ha`ena, 808-826-1053,
www. ntbg.org. Open Tuesday
through Friday and Sunday from 9:30 am to 4 pm. For guided tours that
last about two hours, the cost is $20per person. For a self-guided tour,
the cost is $15. Reservations are required for guided tours. The botanical
garden is set in a tropical valley in the shadow of Makana Mountain that
towers over the area. Limahuli Gardens gives you the opportunity to experience
a living history of sorts as you view native plants, plants that were
introduced by the Polynesian settlers and by westerners. You’ll
walk through lava rock terraces built by Limahuli’s first inhabitants
and see the taro that still thrives there. You’ll see plants such
as mango, kava, tumeric and sugar. There are benches located along the
¾-mile trail that allows you to take in the extraordinary views
and scenery. Limahuli Garden is a part of the National Tropical Botanical
Garden, which focuses on conservation and education efforts in restoring
the native ecosystem.
