Big Island of Hawaii - Kailua-Kona
Big Island of Hawaii
Adventures on Land - Biking
The Big Island may not have much in the way of mountain biking (lava
and mud will do that), but road bikes are another story. There are a slew
of mainland companies offering all-inclusive tours of the Big Island,
but why not support the local ones who have firsthand knowledge of the
island?
Kona Coast Cycling Tours (
327-1133, toll free
877-592-BIKE, www.cyclekona.com).
Kona Coast Cycling offers daily bike tours Monday through Saturday. Participants
don’t need to be experts – these folks think the best way
to experience a new place is on the seat of a bicycle. Their tours are
mostly downhill and “van supported,” so if you need a breather
and want to ride in the van for awhile, you can. They offer several tours,
including the popular “Kona Coffee Express” through coffee
country ($80). There is a two-person minimum for tours, which include
bikes and helmets. Closed toe shoes are required.
Orchid Isle Bicycling (
327-0087, toll free
800-219-2324, www.orchidislebicycling.com).
Orchid Isle, another locally owned company, offers multi-day bike tours
of the Big Island, such as the Kona Coast tour ($1,995), a seven-day excursion
that covers the route of the Iron Man triathlon, or the Tour de Paradise
($2,495), a nine-day jaunt around the
entire island. Prices are per-person and include guide, bike, helmet,
breakfast, lunch, repair services, airport pick-up and hotel shuttle.
There is a minimum of two participants per tour, though single riders
can pay more for an individual tour.
